Chapter 10: The Bubble Dome

"I began my research on a type of ore found in our mountains here. Luckily, I had a very dedicated team to assist me-small in numbers but great in skill and heart. This special ore I named 'vita ore stone.' My team set up my experiments inside the cave so as to shield us from the bitter cold outside.

"We heated up the stone to three thousand degrees. This process took many long hours, but it was necessary to reach the total meltdown point. How lucky we were that the heat kept us very warm in the cave! Since we had several production rooms inside, the heat circulated through the pockets of air, the large room openings, and all through the surrounding rooms. It was as if we had natural tunnel vents throughout. What a great advantage this was, in the midst of the bitter cold outside!

"After the ore melted, we used a large ladle and carefully poured the liquid into flat molds. This process had to be done very rapidly to produce panes of glass. While the ore was cooling, we dumped large mounds of snow onto the glass, which created a frosted effect. Then after a short while, we lifted the slab out of the mold. We now had a sheet of glass between six and eight inches thick, and the result was amazing. Looking from one side you couldn't see through it at all, because of the frosted effect. But from the other side, it was as though you were looking through clear glass. We realized these would make perfect windows for our log homes, so we began making many panes. At this point, Santa hadn't seen what we were up to, but we wanted to be sure of our results before we brought them to him. Just by chance, two of my elf workers stood two pieces of glass right next to each other, and we couldn't get them apart no matter how hard we tried. We finally realized the glass was magnetic. That's when it occurred to me to create a dome to protect us.

"Wrinkles thought it was 'too cool!' when I explained the process and demonstrated how it was done. The experiment was now a success, and it was time to show Santa. Wrinkles went into the woods to find Santa and returned with word that Santa would do his best to get back as soon as possible.

"While we waited, Wrinkles gently reminded me, 'Whatever you do, try very hard not to smack your gum around Santa.' Wrinkles knew how enthusiastic I am about gum. I laughed and agreed that I would try my best not to smack. Wrinkles added, 'Santa won't say anything to you about it, but you don't want it to annoy him.' You see, it seems as though I always have gum in my mouth. I just love gum. Any flavor, anytime. One of my friends, Chuckles, actually invented some gum. He made it in delicious flavors, and you could make huge bubbles with it. I was known to blow the biggest bubbles at any given moment and without warning.
